The true Democracy is a vehicle for crisis overrun.

By Demosthenes Kyriazis

The Law of History
"Knowledge of the true facts of the past (history) leads to reliable predictions of the events of the present and of the future."   This view is  known as the doctrine of the Law of History.  One of the great supporters of this doctrine was Thucydides, who wrote the history of the Peloponnesian War with sublime respect for the truth of the events and preached that "The first task of the historian is to seek the truth with persevering perseverance"

In connection with this doctrine, Goethe's following statement is:  Whosoever his story does not know,/ the How and Why for three thousand years,/  of the darkness remains/  and lives only from one day to the next.

The major problem we face in the current era is the financial crisis; it's the how we overrun the crisis. Analyzes of the causes of the crisis and how we have to deal with it, are many but they do not touch the deepest cause of the crisis.

The following lines give a view on how to deal with the crisis, based on the doctrine of the Law of History.

History of Xenophon. Descent of the Myrians[1].

As the oldest remembered from the High School courses, the brother of the King of Persia Cyrus, gathered 13,000 Greek and 100,000 Asians mercenaries and marched against his brother, the king of Persia Artaxerxes, to overthrow him and become king.

In the Battle of the Cunaxa of Babylon (401 BC), the army of Cyrus, starring the Greeks, defeated Artaxerxes' most numerous forces, but the campaign ended, for in this battle Cyrus was killed.  After the death of Cyrus, the Greeks decided to return to their homeland. But Artaxerxes decided to exterminate them, without openly confronting them and bearing the consequences of the conflict. He makes capitulation with them, strongly believing that without their leaders the Greeks soldiers were condemned to extinction. He then called on the leadership of the Greeks to supposedly talk about the capitulation and he killed them all; he killed the leader of the Greeks Clearchus, 4 army Generals, 20 captains and 200 soldiers who assembled the leadership of the Greeks.

In the Persian King's view, this act was equivalent to the extinction of about 10,000 Greek soldiers; an extinction at no cost, risk and loss.  This choice would have been an absolute success for the Persians or Asians which had dogmatic and monarchic mindset, but not for the Greeks which had reasonable and democratic mindset.

After the massacre of their leaders, the Greeks took decisions in a democratic manner to face the great danger and to select the best way to return to their homeland. One of them, who played a major role in this effort, was the elected new General Xenophon; the philosopher and historical writer Xenophon.

The basic democratic decisions taken by the Myrians were: (1) Confirm their will to return home and to take on the dangers and consequences of the venture. (2) Selection of the road of the return. The alternative roads were: either to the Aegean, crossing areas controlled by Artaxerxes or to the Black Sea, crossing mountainous and inaccessible areas (the mountains of present-day Kurdistan and Armenia), facing the war tribes of the region and the difficulties of winter. (3) Election of the most prominent of the Myrians  as leadership that would organize in detail the implementation of these decisions.

The myrrians eventually managed to succeed their goal and reach the Black Sea. When they viewed it cried the historical words:  “Thalatta Thalatta”  (Θάλαττα, Θάλαττα), that means  Sea, Sea.

The deepest cause of the success of the Myrians

The “descent of myrrians” is a great success not only for the data of that time, but also for the present-day data. What the myrians succeeded was the organized transfer of a "city" of 10,000 people, from Babylon to Trebizond  in about a year (Sept. 401 - May 399 BC).

The cause of this success

At first reading it seems, it to be due to the military culture of Greeks; to the courage, the power, the training and the paideia of the Greek soldiers. But the military culture is strongly  correlated with the military leaders.  Indeed, with the death of Cyrus, an army of 113,000 mercenaries was immediately disrupted, apart from the small part of it, of the 10.000 Greeks. But the most important thing is that when Artaxerxes killed all their leadership, again the Greeks survived and succeeded in the miracle of the "descent of the myrians" .

Without the intention of degrading the military capabilities of the myrians, we think that the deeper cause of the success of them was the culture of the city that they had; was their democratic mentality, which ensure consistency and unity.

Connections and Conclusions

From the above it is concluded that the “descent of the myrians” is a great example of overrunning  a  difficult problems, applying the principles of the Direct Democracy, because this ensures: Wide acceptance of decisions, faith in the effort and realization with high consistency. The “descent of the myrians” proves that the decisions of the True Democracy have greater power and effectiveness from the “wisely designed decisions” of the oligarchs.

In the current period, 10 millions Greeks are facing a major economic and general crisis.
Today we still need to take and to realize difficult decisions, such as those taken by the Myrians  2.414 years ago. If we manage to create similar conditions of faith and coherence, we  will overrun the crisis, we will see "light at the end of the tunnel" and we will cry again “Thalatta, Thalatta”

However, the current culture of ordinary citizens, and especially their political leaders, is not the true democracy culture. It is the culture of "democracy" of the great and false words, which our people liken to the March snowfalls that melt quickly; "your words are fake like the snow of March".

The current system of exercising power does not have the characteristics of true democracy, but the characteristics of the monarchy of an elected "enlightened man" who essentially takes all major decisions without the participation of the citizens and deeply without the participation of the majority of citizens’ delegates. The participation  of delegates is only formal and limited to the ratification of their leader's decisions and his close institutional or extra-institutional advisers.

But such a constitution is not Democracy. We just used to call it democracy, as we used to call democracies, even the regimes in which the “enlightened leaders” are not elected by the citizens. It is self-evident, however, that in order the Law of History to be applied and to overrun the crisis, we need to return to the principles of the Real Democracy. Tackling the crisis with the same "democratic" principles and practices, we have little probabilities  of getting us out of the crisis,  because these principles and practices have created the crisis.

If the current political leadership believes in the law of history and follows its morals, then its mentality will be regenerated and the crisis will be overrun quickly.

Otherwise, the overrunning of the crisis will happen by the citizens, but at a great cost and a considerable lag, because the citizens will have to break down an unstable political system that gave birth to the crisis

I wish the first scenario happened.

I wish the citizens’ delegates/politicians to understand that it is time to stop to behave "like the snow in March"
